Arrive early
Tamu are morning markets. In Keningau, traders begin setting up as early as 5am Wikipedia, and a Tenom trader interviewed in 2024 sells from early morning until about noon Daily Express. The Sabah Tourism Board describes usual tamu hours as roughly 6am to 3pm Sabah Tourism Board, but busy stalls can sell out well before closing.
Check the market day — and how sure we are
Published days sometimes disagree. Every listing carries one of five notes: confirmed by two or more sources, from one source, sources disagree, reported by a community list only, or not verified. A day listed for today means it is published for today, not that the tamu is confirmed to be running. For a long trip, treat anything other than “confirmed” as a reason to ask locally first.
Sites can move too. Tamu Donggongon’s traders have used a temporary site since November 2024 while the old structure is redeveloped Bernama.
Open the Tamu FinderGetting there
Each listing has a directions button. Where we have a verified map position it routes to that exact point; where we do not, it opens a map search instead and says so — the search may not land on the tamu itself.
Parking near busy tamu is limited and roads get jammed, so the Sabah Tourism Board suggests public transport or a ride-hailing car Sabah Tourism Board. In Kota Kinabalu, Gaya Street is closed to traffic on Sunday mornings for the market Sabah Tourism Board.
Bring cash
Most tamu do not support online transactions, so bring cash Sabah Tourism Board. Small notes make buying a single bundle of greens easier.
Ask about the food
Some traditional foods contain pork or alcohol. Bosou can be made with pork or wild boar Wikipedia, and tapai and lihing are rice wines Wikipedia. Our food guides flag these where a source says so — if in doubt, ask the seller.
